As a young child I was captured by the transmitted colours of glass and its ability to transform the atmosphere of a place. My practice seeks to replicate this marvel through the making of traditionally painted acid etched stained glass panels and cast sculptures.

My panels tell a story, either an interpretation of a client’s vision or an expression of my investigation into contemporary cultural or environmental issues. My personal investigations regularly demand an expression of 3 dimensions, which afford the opportunity to create a warm or cast tactile sculptural piece.

My long term aim is to influence the next generation of glass artist; to capture the imagination of the next young me. I am actively involved in delivering workshops and presentations to secondary school children and youth groups to introduce the medium of glass and to break down the barriers of the attainment gap.

My making process relies on observation, communication, and materiality.

Observation is more than a visual function, it is the processing of the details, monitoring movement, recognition of information and respect, all of which inform my imagination and design process.

Communication is the essence of art and involves all of the senses; engaging with a client and hearing their words, seeing their expressions, feeling their emotions; presenting an empathetic design that captures the essence of their emotions and vision.

Thereafter, the materiality of each cut of glass, etched gradation and every brush stroke is my expression of that design, my personal contribution to the narrative.  The understanding of the materials, the differing characteristics of glass, its ability to morph into the piece I envisage it to become; how does it cut, its colour changes in light, its response to heat and ability to hold fired paint. I also collaborate with other artists either in the unique creation of metalwork and its ability to present the glass, or the use of vinyl cut stencils to deliver flexible solutions.

My rewards are the ability of the final piece to communicate with its viewer and how they engage with the piece.
